NOVEMBER - BLACK FRIDAY 2008!

Wow...despite the fact that I LOVE a bargain, I had absolutely NO desire this year to head out to the stores at the crack of dawn just to save a buck or two.

First of all, this last year I've been working very hard at doing more, with less, better. I don't mean that in a condescending way, either. Simplifying and using the resources I have at my disposal to the fullest.

With the montra of "Recycle, Renew, Reuse" stuck in my head - the whole act of rushing out to the stores to spend my hard earned dollars on yet more products that we probably really don't need, was just not that appealing me.

I did go out and take advantage of some pre-Christmas 50% off on ornaments sale at Macy's today, but that was it.

I started a tradition of sorts years ago when my kids were young that I have continued even with the grand kids. I get them an ornament each year. (My original intent with my kids was so that once they were grown and moved out, they would have some ornaments of their own to begin their first Christmas trees with.)

The lines were long and the "technology" challenging. Registers and "pin-pads" weren't working and sales staff were flustered and few to be had.

I've focused my gift giving this year on: 1) hand made gifts 2) gifts of time and 3) gifts of purpose.

I've been quilting and baking. The gifts I've opted to purchase are done with "purpose" in mind and/or something consumable rather than just another 'trinket' to line the shelf with. Here are a couple of quilts I've done so far this year:

This one was done for my oldest grandson - I have plans to do one for each of them

This one was done for my daughter in law

I watched the news this evening with a different prospective on Black Friday, this year. Watching the hoards of people pouring into the stores for yet more "stuff" just really didn't sit well with me. Some even lost their lives!

42" Plasma TV - $700.00
iPod players - $49.99
Animated Reindeer with red noses - $69.99
Guitar Hero - $99.99
Wii Bundle - $199.99
The life of a sales associate @ Walmart - PRICELESS!!

Gawd, I'm not sure that I could sleep at night knowing that my "mad dash" to get the latest gadget or "deal" ultimately cost someone their life...I just don't know. Our greed has reached an all time high. Totally disgusting!
